I am thinking of using a mixture of topsoil and well rotted manure for the tomato's and aubergines I am growing in pots this year. the hope being it won't dry out as quickly as compost has anyone else tried this and is my thinking correct?

According to my tomato growing notes, it says

Mix equal parts organic planting mix or compost with best-quality potting soil, then toss in a few handful of garden soil for a blend that is light and drains well but won't dry out quickly. Add one to two cups of 5-10-10 fertilizer and mix well.

I think garden soil is too heavy so best to mix in some compost and by all means also use the well rotted manure as that would make up for fertiliser. Just mix them until you think it looks right, neither too heavy or light. Read all you can from the Net on growing tomato/aubergine, the aftercare etc.
