  • Compost For "earth Box"

I HAVE JUST PURCHASED AN EARTHBOX (through an advert in the magazine)FOR GROWING TOMATOES, I UNDERSTAND FROM AN AMERICAN WEB SITE THAT YOU MUST NOT USE "SOIL" - ONLY COMPOST.

I HAVE ASKED THE MAKERS AND THEY WILL NOT GIVE ME AN ANSWER, THEY ONLY SAY GO TO A GARDEN CENTRE AND BUY COMPOST. AS WE ALL KNOW COMPOST IS AS VARIABLE AS THE BRITISH WEATHER.

HAVE ANY OF YOU USED THE EARTH BOX ??? ANY SUGGESTIONS RE A SUITABLE COMPOST

What kind of potting mixture should I use?

Almost any brand of potting mix for containers or hanging plants will work. You'll need 2.2 cubic feet (60 quarts) per box and 1 cup of dolomite or lime.

Try to find potting mix without fertilizer already mixed in.

What kind of fertilizer does the EarthBox® need?

Each time you plant in the EarthBox®, use two cups of a dry granular fertilizer or plant food for vegetables. The three numbers of the elements making up the fertilizer content should be in the range of 5 to 15; i.e., 12-8-10, 10-10-10. After you have applied the fertilizer stripe, no additional fertilizer will be needed.

From the website - sounds a bit like filling hanging baskets?

Earth boxes new idea to me. Have Googled it and looked at the stuff. Looks like expensive grow bags to me or troughs into which you can put your own favourite concoction. If you don't have a favourite, you can put the compost from grow bags. I favour grow bags myself for a vey simple reason - I can lift them! Think I'm losng it tonight.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
