  • best time to start a wormery?

I want to start my wormery as soon as possible, do you think it is too cold outside for them ? The temperature are around 10 degrees/ days and 4/ nights... What's your opinion?

I'm by no means an expert but I started my wormery off about a month ago and my worms seem fine. It's in a sheltered area but it's been down to at least minus 5 degrees with no apparant ill effects.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom

I've come to take you home."

Err yeah, we normally move our wormery 'under cover' in winter but forgot this year - they're fine. You've got to keep an eye on them though when you first set up the wormery, they have a bit of a tendency to go walk-about!

I finally got round to checking on mine this week. I was convinced they would have all perished as I didn't really wrap them up over the winter (even though the wormery is right outside the back door and I stand right next to it when I have a ciggie I still forget it's there!)

To my surprise, they were happy as Larry in there and there was a load of eggs too, so I would say that it's not too early to start it off and like SBP said, they tend to go walkies for the first couple of weeks, so check them every day!

My compost heap, and my Dalek, are absolutely teeming with tiger worms. (where do they come from? I've never dug one out of the soil, but they appear in my compost like magic)

The best time to start a wormery is as the weather warms up as the worms will be more active and you'll get it up and running quicker. However, you can start them at any time (mine was a birthday present one August so not the best time either) just remember not to feed them much until they're fired up otherwise you'll end up with it going manky!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
