compost full of ants

Is this good, bad or does it not matter??
I have a home made compost bin with slatted sides (hazel sticks) could it be too open?? the top is covered with an old compost bag to keep out too much rain. It is quite a new venture and less than 3 months old. There are also a few slugs in there too.
Any advice??

I don't think it matters. You can shift the ants if you dig it over but they'll just take up residence a few metres away.

I think it doesn't matter much. Insects are generally a good thing when it comes to compost I think, as it's they (along with bacteria etc) who process the rotting matter and turn it into compost.

Ditto above but if you want rid, add some water to your compost, they wont like it.

First thing I thought was that the compost was too dry. We too have started a heap - I know I am going to have trouble to get water concious dh to let us water it in summer! I can think of worse places the ants could be!!!!
