COW = Can of worms. Its a specific named product rather than a generic wormery.

Okay Maria, heres what I do.

When you first set up you get a coir block, then you need to leave them for a week or so without feeding them (worm treat is okay). Then you give them handfuls of waste every couple of days and watch how much they are eating, adding more or less accordingly. In my wormcity I have layered the coir then food on top, then a layer of damp shredded newspaper. Instead of the newspaper I have a moisture mat in the Can o'worms. They will eat the coir, newspaper and moisture mat eventually.

I think it would take atleast 4-6 months for the first tray to be ready. Remember that it takes a while to get into full production, after that it should get quicker.

Eventually!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mine ate the moisture mat within a month and I've neer bothered replacing it as I want them to eat my waste. Sames goes for worm treat, don't see the point, mine seem to find mashed potato as a treat and that keeps them happy!!!!!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I think the moisture mat of coir can be freely 'duplicated' by using cardboard or jumpers, etc. Its at the top to hold in the moisture and the worms can hide below it, though they eat it too. You can get a lime additive to to keep the balance of the bin right, only need a little every now and again. I don't know whats in the worm treats, but again you're only talking a bit every now and again. I reckon happy worms are cr@ppy worms!

You should also add oyster shell to your wormery occasionally as a calcium supplement, but that should be detailed in your kits instructions.

Oyster shell, very posh!!!!!! Never heard that one but do know that a good dose of crushed egg shells is very beneficial.

Lol! You might be busy with them for a few weeks - when you first get them they do have a tendency to do a 'Great Escape'!

I'll let you into a little secret.....*whispers so that DH doesn't hear* I collect up all the peelings etc, soak them in boiling water to soften up then I use the handheld blender to mush it up a bit. Well I'm helping them out aren't I, 'cos they've got no teeth

Don't forget- lots of newspaper too

                              Happy days....
