  • Struggling with new garden/soil

After growing for 17 years in excellent soil with plenty of my own compost I'm moved and off from scratch again.
dug a couple of quick veg beds but not doing too well.
Peas just not growing at all, beans not growing, courgettes leaves just keep going yellow and plants giving up. Everything looking on the yellow side actually. Beetroot just coming through so don't know about that yet.
chard and radishes seem OK, tomatoes actually doing very well.
    I am completely puzzled.
I've actually bought compost and potted the Aubergines , peppers, cues etc to save them but the main plot is looking pretty awful.
I can't work out what it needs.
    Any clue anyone?

If the soil has not been used for some time then it may need a few years of cultivation to restore its condition. You don't say what type of soil it is and what condition it is in. Whatever condition though, digging in lots of compost is the best start as this helps to reatin mositure and I suspect your veg are drying out a bit. One way to start off a new bed is to grow potatoes as this helps break up the soil ready for the next lot of planting. But it's probably too late for potatoes now.

Hi Pickledtink, there's just a possibility the it's not the soil lacking but that it has been treated with weed killer recently and that is affecting your plants. Although the weather is now getting warmer, we have had a prolonged cold, wet spell and that seems to have slowed everything down. Veg in my garden has been sitting there for weeks doing nothing and only come to life within the last few days. Hope yours picks up soon
I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

all my veg have been about 2 inches tall for the last month, though the last few days they do seem to have picked up, everything just seems to be very slow at the moment.

i've added tons of compost over the last few years, i guess like most things it's trial and error.

If it was weedkiller, it would affect all your plants.
Peas don't like temps above 20C.
Some courgettes do have yellowish leaves.

can you post any piccies, so we can have a look-see?

"Dug a couple of quick veg beds.."

Can I ask what the ground was before you dug your veg beds? Was it lawn, bare soil, flower beds? Is the soil clay, sand, silt? I would think chances are, that the soil has been depleted of nutrients for one reason or another, either used up or washed away. I can highly recommend this;Organic Fertiliser with Fish & Liquid Compost for an instant tonic/soil boost (although it seems a bit pricey, it's marvellous stuff!) Or Chicken Pellets & a Seaweed foliar spray works well too.

Hello Pickledtink. Wonderful to see you back. WE wondered where you had gone. Hope you are very happy in your new place. I've moved house too, and yes it is a challenge to work out a new garden and what it needs. Different soil, different conditions. Hope it all works out great for you.

Thanks all and yahoo there Alice. Nice to be remembered! I've been without any garden at all for the last year.
Lot's of good ideas to ponder there.
It was lawn before but as the place and garden had been todged up as a development sale and not really used I would have expected better. Although I don't know anything about grass. Never had any lawn in my old cliff side garden!
One bed has more clay than the other yet there's miserable plants in both.
I dug in a bit of compost I blagged from a friend but probably not enough.
Might just try a bit of good old BFB and see.
