raised bed and varnish...

I recently got hold of some pine wood and I want to use it to make raised bed....
However, I know that it will rot relatively fast if I do not protect it. So I was thinking about applying some varnish or similar product BUT I am scared of the product leaking on the ground....
What do you think ? shall I just use it as it is ?? if so, do you know how long it will last ?

I think this has been covered here before if you do a search. I can't remember what the conclusion was, but I have painted mine and no-one has died yet as have some of the others. Some people don't bother if the beds are on the lottie but mine are in the garden and I wanted them to look more attractive.
