Gardening with the Moon?

Hallo,
I am not sure where to put this, so please feel free to move it if there is a more appropriate place.

Back home there is lots of gardening done according to the phases of the moon, i.e. sowing done with a growing moon (sorry, don't know the right words) and harvesting with a vanishing moon.

Are there such traditions in the UK too? Have you got experience?
My mum follows them very strictly with lots of success, i.e. over 100 tomatoe plants one year on her small terrace. lol

I think this needs looking in to, it's really interesting. I know lots of people have done trials on this subject,I remember reading one in gardeners world I think or was it the RHS mag. But looking outside at the moon tonight made me think about this subject earlier. We're all in our houses not in touch with the land the way people used to be. I can feel some research coming on.

I am actually harvesting the first garlic from my moon trial tomorrow.

Evidently, tonights moon is called the 'Worm Moon'. It brings in spring in the northern hemisphere and wakes up the sleeping worms in the soil so invigorating growth. So according to the moon, spring seems to have sprung!

There were certainly plenty of fat juicy worms in the allotment soil I was turning over at the weekend, so there may be something in that, terrier!

And a bad day for roots...so I'm waiting until Friday. As long as all garlics have the same amount of moon cycles, the trial is valid.

When I took the lid off my compost bin yesterday there were literally hundreds of worms stuck all around the top! I rushed inside for a pair of rubber gloves and re-located most of them to my wormery, which I reckon needed a worm boost! (They are just the right sort of 'stripy' worms for that). My OH laughed at me for being so excited about them . Good job I'm not a worm phobic, I would have freaked out!! I love the idea that it's all connected to the moon - I'm off to do some good reading of that site later Zazen, looks v interesting. Not sure that I can cope with more ideas right now though, my mind is buzzing with stuff.

Evidently, tonight's full moon is a "Sprouting Grass Moon" because it shines down on the new grasses of northern spring. I hope it does something for my flower seeds that so far are refusing to germinate.
