If your holes are big enough for flies to get in then surely they are big enough for the worms to escape. I found this when i built mine and the worms were exploring.

Lez - how do you remove the compost without loosing worms? How often do you do it?

Mine really like meat! But I only give them a small amount as I put in too much a few weeks ago and it started to go a bit rancid, but I was able to just take it out and they seem to be fine now. Apart from that, mine also like carrot peal and banana peel. Oh and they also like lots of shredded paper.

I hate bananas but I like to give the skins to my roses and some for the worms, so when my sister comes down for a visit I buy some and make her eat them behind the shed. She only grumbles a bit as she does like bananas.
As for worm favs - besides avocado there is cucumber, pumpkins and squash, you can almost see them picking up speed when they "see" a chunk of cucumber coming their way.

            Nog

The worms will wander around all the trays but I just add food to the top one. As the weather warms up they will breed and feed more rapidly so you should be getting more worms soon.

They all seem happy now....I am using two trays and am just adding shredded paper and crushed egg shells. Once they have finished most of the stuff in there I will add more.

I've had my wormery about 4-5 weeks now, it's my first attempt, and the worms seem to be doing well.
I was a bit paranoid that I'd either killed them in the first couple of weeks or that they'd all escaped through the drainage holes in the bottom because there seemed to be no activity at all, so a couple of weeks ago I emptied it all out into a large plant pot to check on them and start again (there still seemed to be quite a few in there).
I've since been adding fruit and veg scraps daily, bits of paper/thin card, crushed egg shells and tea bags. They seem to be loving the avacado, strawberry tops and bits of watermelon and there's more activity going on, including one attempted escape.

One thing I am wondering about though, is it too soon for liquid after a month? I've just drained aprox. two yoghurt pots full out of the bottom.
When I emptied and started again, I rinsed the plant pot I'd used and poured this back to moisten the new newspaper when I put it all back (but only about a quarter of a cup full), or could it be rain getting in through the small ventilation hole in the top?

No the liguid will come as soon as you put stuff in...don't forget that most of the things you put in have a large liguid content.

I would not put the liquid back in.....it is good diluted 20:1 as a fertiliser.
