  • Well Rotted Manure offered

Hi, I have seen a posting on freecycle for well rotted manure free to collect.

Is there anything/type I should be wary of or would any be ok for the veg plot?

    Thanks

Hi BumbleB. I've pasted you a link to an article about manure contamination caused byherbicides which I think is the only thing you need to be wary of. I use well rotted horse manure but as it's from my own two horses I know that it's safe.

Thanks for that Lorraine, I have asked for further details to the person who posted the offer but have not received any response. I think I will probably pass on it as after reading your link and a few other articles it is not worth the risk.
      Thanks

I'd give you some of mine but I think 300 miles is a long way to travel for horse poo!

Well it would be nice. I hear that WRM is great for the veg plot - pity you are not closer. Thanks for the offer guys.

You should be able to get loads....stables are desprate to get rid of it. If its fresh pile it and let it rot on the plot.

aside from the weedkiller issue......will manure rot down ok in a black darlic type compost bin?. will it be to hot(is there such a thing?!), or to airless in there?.
my allotments have been given a huge pile by the neighbouring horse owner, and i'd like to get my bit started on its rotting down.
i will endevour to find out about what chemicals are used before taking any.

If it's fresh you can put a load in a container, fill it two thirds with manure then top up with water. Leave it for a couple of weeks minimum, then add the solids to the soil. The liquid can be then diluted and stored for later use as a plant feed.
