Sounds good to me Bex. Glad to have you on board and you too Mrs D. I haven't tried any other gardening forums but while looking for something else I came across a parenting forum which really raised my hackles. Talk about petty, small minded........ I know they are concerned about their kids but so negative and uptight. Won't be going there again. Will stick to the tried and tested "trial and terror" and chats with my neighbours/sis/mum/other parents on here who are looking to instil similar values in their small people. Much less scary.

    I can breathe here.

Know what you all mean, have found this forum very friendly. Have joined various other ones in the past in an attempt to get answers to a specific query but have never felt welcome enough to stop for long - like the fact that despite the fact that there's obviously loads of people with far more experience and knowledge than me they don't patronise me or laugh (well not too much anyway!) at my stupid questions.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Hi EB, I think the certain something that this site has got is that we all want to achieve the same thing, there is no competition and the more experienced are more than happy to help the clueless like me.
I went on an ou forum once and introduced myself saying I was starting a course in such and such and someone replied I wouldn't bother if I were you its not a very good course. Really put me off going there again - negativity, who needs it.

I agree Bex. I think the enthusiasm and passion for GYO, and life in general, is infectious and inspiring. It's great.

I subscribe to both GYO and KG and they both offer different levels of advice for different levels of gardener. Whilst you may be newbies now, in a year or two your knowledge base will grow and you may well find yourself wanting more information or advice on more technical issues and KG will fill that gap. The two magazines overlap beautifully and are aimed at slightly different markets which is why they are both successful and why I subscribe to both.

The forums are like chalk and cheese, here the tempo is more tranquil and any dissent sees the whole thread dissapear which again is good for people who are new to growing fruit and veg and are'nt perhaps overly confident, whilst on the KG site its a little more "wild west" but the answers generally come from seasoned gardeners with huge amounts of experience and not from people who may have read about it or googled it (no insult intended LJ) although there are a good number of newbies as well. Unless the dissent gets personal its allowed to continue and to be honest is quire entertaining at times.

And there lies the difference between the two magazines and long may they both be available

Its all about what you feel comfortable with and this site has that comfort factor by the bucketful.

Hmmnnnn and so say I. KG is much more challenging, but GYO is gentle and kind. Room for both, methinks........

If you want to find an 'abrasive' forum then try the BBC Gardening site. Very good at rowing there. I have been a member there since January and very rarely post now.

I has witnessed several nasty events throughout this year.

This site is much friendlier and has much more interest for myself.

Your comments on the KG site are very interesting - I've never been, just bought the mag (once) hence this thread. Who wants to get aggro when you are asking a simple question? Long live GYO and the Vine - friendly, happy, simple to understand info - and a good laugh as well! DDL

I visited the site as a guest as a result of this thread and there did seem to be quite a lot of sniping going on but that could have just been the couple of threads I looked at - haven't got enough time to contribute meaningfully to another forum so afraid you're stuck with me here!

You know, I expect I should show my faith to GYO but although my preference is GYO always, as I find it is much more at my level, and I somehow find it a younger, more funky read (is that possible to say about a load of text? ) I also find KG goes into that bit more depth sometimes for me. I also often find though that it totally loses me!

And anyway, we share some of our members across the forums, so we must share at least some characteristics, right? Look at me, the peace keeper!
