  • Watering can

This being my first allotment I was bound to make a few mistakes. Thankfully they are at a premium, but one that I have made is to make a few rows of plants/seedlings slightly out of reach of the watering can and to get to them I have to stand carefully where my plants are. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could purchase a watering can with an extra long neck to reach the slightly inaccessable plants. If not, then I'll get some pipe and some tape and improvise.

I'm not sure how far out of reach they are, but I find that if you have the rose (the piece on the end of the spout) with the holes pointing upwards to the sky, and swing the can slightly as you water it has quite a long reach.

They cost a bit but a haws can will have a long reach.

I've seen them at Haws too. A couple of good roses will help. I would definately recommend investing in a fine, a medium and a standard rose. They give you that extra reach, but also help to control the flow. Compare a fine rose to a standard one when watering seedlings, for example, and you'll see what I mean.

I've just done a search for Haws watering cans and they certainly do have long spouts on them. The prices quoted are ridiculous though. A couple are fifty five quid.

I think I'll find myself a piece of pipe and bodge the job.

you may not need to water at all.
I puddle in my seedlings, water them well the next day, and then only give them a good drink if it's dry for days on end.

The picture was taken at Tees Yard near Middlesbrough when the loco was en route from Grosmont to York. I rode on it from Battersby to Tees.

Thanks for that NOG. I've made the decision not to bother buying another watering can though. The amount of rain we've had these last few days should mean that I won't need to water again until after the seedlings have sprouted, so then I'll know where they are and I should be able to put planks between them if I need to reach over a bit futher.

                        Thanks again everyone anyway.
