  • help needed how to make a wormery

hi all i have been composting for a few years now ie about 6 or 7 years now.
and i would like to make a home made wormery.
but its got to be made out of things i may have of things i can get for free or a cheap as i can.
th only reason is as i don't work as I'm a full time carer so money is tight
any info would be helpful thanks

I was reading up on this yesterday

from memory.... and old plastic dustbin, this some holes drilled in the bottom, a layer of gravel, then a board with holes in (I'm not sure what this should be made of), then some shredded paper and card for the worms to retreat to... then your veg. It should be covered to keep it damp.

The worms have to be the stripey type (can't remember their name) and they can be bought from a tackle shop.

So, really, everything can be free (you may have them or could get them off freecycle?), except the worms, which I would imagine would be cheap?

Someone might have a better explanation for you.... tbh the book I read wasn't much clearer than me

        try:

vermicomposters.com - Vermicomposting, worm bin, composting with worms community and forums
great community with loads of ideas on worm bins

        Red Worm Composting
        Advice and good videos.

When it comes to stockign your wormery (worms) my advice would be to dig around in your compost heaps and collect the worms you find there. Most of the worms actually in (not around) compost heaps at this time of year will be the right type of worms for a worm bin.

I made one last year out of cat litter trays. Cost me about £10 (plus the worms that I was able to get for free). If you search the forum I have posted how to make it, and I think I posted some pictures of it as well.

If you already have a compost bin then the little reddish brown worms which collect in there are the right type. They apparently don't survive for very long once you spread the compost so taking a few from your existing bin won't harm either the compost or the soil where it's going to be spread - in fact you're probably 'rescuing' them.
