Farmers are allocated cash by the government for not growing anything on some land so why cant they allocate the farmers money for people to use them as allotments instead of growing weeds and grass

Most people just don't have the commitment/dedication/time/knowledge/inclination that's required.
Unless of course peak oil/everything does kick in soonish.

people with room to GYO at home should actually be encouraged to give up allotments for those that have nowhere to GYO (ie flats)Originally posted by NOG View Postpeople with no Children should be allocted children from familes with more than one.
and ... people with fridges in their gardens should be made to live in flats

Take a train ride through Luton (don't get off there, Jeebus!) and look at the "gardens" as you near the town centre (Southbound).
Depressing to look at I tell you - there's plenty of land, it's just not being used wisely. Most of those people don't deserve to have the garden, let alone anything else.A simple dude trying to grow veg. http://haywayne.blogspot.com/

Why should people give up their allotments? I think that's very unfair as long as they keep on top of it.
This reminds me of the debate which got my goat earlier today, regarding whether OAPs should relinquish their free bus passes if they could in fact afford to pay for the public transport they currently get for free. Again: why should they? They've worked hard for it.
Anyway, I'm getting down off my soap box now!

Oh NOG please! I'm on the receiving end of all those kids in my shop!!! On the sensible side, don't know the dimensions of my garden but with a patio space 3ydsx 2yds for bbq & table, a 6x8' greenhouse and a garage, my lawn isn't even big enough for an Eglu ( & i'm desparate for chickens!), so I'd love to have an allotment too, my only drawback is another addition to my monthly bills...and the fact that my Good Life skills won't keep me fed for more than a week!
