I have been informed that all the market gardens around here use growmore fertilizer and get huge crops,does it damage the soil what are the advantages and disatvantages of useing it.

Growmore is a cheap balanced fertiliser (7-7-7) giving equal quantities of NPK.
It has no slow release properties and is inorganic.
Blood fish and bone is the organic equivalent and DOES have slow release properties.

Growmore was developed for the 'Dig for Victory' campaign in WW11 to help feed the nation cheaply.

I don't use growmore any more especially as it has shot up in price in the last year. Also I found that it only had short term benefit and washed out of my light soil fairly quickly. So now I use chicken pellets for a quick fix and blood fish and bone for longer term. I also use manure each year to help improve the soil structure and also provide nutrients.

I'm a Blood Fish and Bone fan too. I recommended it to my son-in-law when he started at veg patch last year. He asked for it at a local garden centre. "How did you know about this?" the salesman asked. "My mum-in-law advised me to use it," replied The Lad. "Ah, yes," said the salesman, "It's usually the old people who know about this." !!!

Take out the word old and substitute with wise!
