Wormery

[vegtable newbie!]

Hi

Does anyone have one?

I have a small garden and a small veg patch, am considering getting a small wormery. Do you think its worth it? Does it attract flys or rats?

i've got one, but only had it a few months, its already taking most of the stuff which the chickens dont eat, and the worms are active.
Flys havent been a problem yet, but they are not that active at the moment

I have one too, but again, only had it running for the past month. Biggest thing is getting into the habit of not putting your kitchen waste into the normal brown recyling bin!

I'd recommend getting a book on the subject, the instructions they usually provide are fairly basic. You'd be suprised what you can feed them!

I have one with a 4 tray system, can't say if this is the most effective, but it does offer the solution of having a continuous supply.

They don't attract rats at all but you do run the risk of fruit flies in the summer. You can minimise this by putting in plenty of newspaper or burying your waste when you put it in but to be honest they're not much of a problem, just make sure you keep your mouth shut as you open. Following a leisurely coffee and chat with TBK today, he has made me see the sense in a wormery - so I shall be installing one in my tiny Henlow garden as soon as possible

Yep, I've got one, the wheelie bin type (without the wheels). Have had it running for the past two years and definitely no problems with rats. As Alison says, you do get fruit flies sometimes but they are not really a problem.

If you have one of the Chase Organics wormeries, I find it helps to secure the lid with clothes pegs. After closing the lid using the rather primitive clip system, close the gap between the sides of the lid and the box with spring pegs. This will prevent any worms or maggots which breed in the box from escaping. Be sure to drain it frequently. I have also found that newspaper on the base is not effective to keep the worms out of the reservoir at the bottom. Next time I empty the box I will be trying some other sort of membrane, such as permeable plastic mulch.

Maggots? You shouldn't be getting maggots in there although you do get various other creatures which form the whole process.
