I have never had a compost bin before - i got a lottie last August and one of the first things i did was put a compost bin on there. I have put peelings in there, egg shells, grass cuttings, a bit of newspaper, coffee grounds etc. Now I notice it looks like there is an ants nest in there and a few slugs. Is this normal? I tried to move it all around in there, but I suspect it needs a bit more than that - are there any compost gurus out there?

If there weren't ants in there before you started composting there would have been sooner or later. Yes it's normal. You'll have all sorts of beasties in there before long. The ants are annoying but they don't really do any harm. And as for slugs, if they're in there at least they're not in your lettuces

You can expect woodlice, ants, earwigs, slugs, snails, flies, centipedes etc. and hopefully lots of worms. Only worry if you get rats.
