BBQ ash

Sorry, I know Ive seen this somewhere on here, but my search button keeps saying I have made an error?
Can any one tell me if its ok to use ash from bbq coals in compo tumbler. I know its ok to use wood ash but thought there some issue with coal ash and sterility in soil. Would this be the same for bbq ash?

If you use charcoal you will be fine. If you use the coal briquettes I wouldn't risk it. Can't remember why coal is no good for soil but the ash is only good for paths.

Thanks jeannied. Will add it to tumbler then. It was the charcoal, not the brickettes. Seemed a shame to waste it! Thankyou

I think you'll find both the lump wood and briquettes are made from charcoal.Coal/coke ash is poisonous,it used to be used to make weed free paths,cinder paths,lasted for years with not a weed in sight.
