Homebase compost and grow bags

Plants in compost didn't seem to get off to a good start.
Also toms in grow bags don't seem as big as normal.
Any one else had experience with homebase compost/grow bags.

A friend of mine bought homebase organic/peat free compost and all her bedding plants died. Still not sure if it was the compost or if she is just a lousy gardener

surprised to hear that all my seeds were sown in homebase compost and i reckon I had nearly 100% germination and the news beds cout out of the lawn we're filled up with it too and we've had some of the best crops ever! Perhaps you had a bad batch? I always rate homebase compost and buy stacks of it during the growing season.

I tried the peat free compost a few year's back. It was very lumpy and full of large woody bits. As a result it didn't retain moisture very well and my seedlings and plants did very poorly. I buy the B&Q multipurpose now which has been very good.

me too easily as good as any of the mid range composts

I had similar problems with B&Q's peat free compost - my plants took *ages* to get going. In the end I top-dressed them with home made compost. It was extremely woody too - I filtered most of it out and laid it down as bark.

The last 3 years I have stuck with Wickes peat in and had good results.

That is an important point Colin, it is usually best to stick with what works for you but of course the compost producers do their best to knock that on the head by changing the formula.

B and Q seed sowing compost and their MP cannot be beaten for me. I consider it my failsafe.

Will probably switch next year.
I usually buy about 15 Growbags and 3 large compost bags.
Anyone seen any discount for this amount ?
