  • Compost Firmness

I've just built some raised beds and am now busy filling them with compost. Because I'm sieving the compost 'clean' it has a very fragile texture. I know this is too loose to plant in but am not sure how firm I should make the soil by tapping down on it. Anyone got any experience for rules of thumb?

    Thanks

Walk on it. Heel to toe all over it then top it up with compost and plant in to it.

If you want brassicas the firmer the better! Cabbages and brussles tend to 'blow' if planted in soft ground.
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

I added sharp sand to mine made it heavier and firmer.

I'd go with NOG. Shuffling, we call it. However I wouldn't plant brassicas in it they need really firm ground. Should be fine for seeds, salad crops, courgettes, etc. Good Luck
