Worm Fattener Recipe

I won a worm cafe on ebay this week which I was (and still) really excited about.

I have been reading up and I understand that I will need to add worm feed to fatten them up If I want them to compost quicker.

I was wondering if anyone had a a recipe I could use.

For them to compost quicker, you need more of them (and young ones, they eat more). They breed quicker in warmer weather ~ wait for spring, or put a blankie over their house?

I wouldn't be paying money for food (whatever next?) they're in there to eat the compost !

A lot of the manufacturers of wormeries try and convince you that you need to add food or lime or whatever to adjust. You really don't. Feed them slowly to start with and then gradually build it up as the weather gets warmer and they breed and you'll be absolutely fine. If you get a load of fruit flies (you will) then add crushed egg shells and if it gets too wet then torn up newspaper / thin card is great.

I asked all my friends and family to give me any old oats or cereal they had at the back of the cupboards so I have been just adding a bit everytime I give them so veggies.

What about feeding them "Wormicelli"?

I am experimenting with two types of wormeries at the moment. One is a large box with donated worms and one is a rather posh wormery with purchased tiger worms. The donated worms are of mixed pedigree and seem to be more active - thought the tiger worms had disappeared but have now found some. Very disappointed with the amount of waste consumed so far but hopeful this will improve with warmer weather. Have visited many sites but not seen that the worms need fattening up so would welcome a link to keep my worms happy.
