A little while ago someone offered me chicken bedding to put into my compost - I'v e just got to decide where to put it. This is a lot of straw and obviously the chicken poop. How long would the straw take to rot down? There may have been a previous post but I don't seem able to find it. Can anyone help?

I'm trying to see if it is worth while putting it on to my new allotment where I have a compost heap made out of pallets with all the clumps of grass we dug out or a dalek which is pretty empty at the moment. At home I have a lovely compost heap growing within pallets. BUT at home we have an infestation of sandhoppers which occurred when we had the drive paved - over time they have spread everywhere. So home and allotment are kept quite separate. Unfortunately, this early in the season I don't have enough green stuff at the allotment. I think it's not on to put it on top of the allotment pallet grass pile so thinking of putting it into the dalek but really not sure how long it will take to rot down. At home it doesn't matter. To be honest, I think I have answered my own question - home it is where we have mainly acid loving plants due to the conifers. Sorry guys must be the heat...A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows
