Hi todayiwillbemostlygrowing (fab name by the way)

We did consider digging down but felt it would be a lot of hard work for potentially not a lot of reward. About 6 inches down it turns quite clay'y and stony and I have to admit, when we were preparing the garden to level it off and what not, I can't say I noticed any worms, so I don't think any would have tried to get in to the beds even if i wanted them to.

For info, two beds are 30cm and one is 45cm high (for parsnips & carrots). I'm just waiting for the rain to stop a bit so I can start sowing my seeds.

Here's hoping for a nice weekend.

SD, my likkle plot was the same as yours, clay and stones from about 6" down. I enlisted OH to try to loosen it up a bit, then threw soil and wotnot on top. What did you use to fill your beds with? I dont think I used nearly enough manure in mine but have fingers crossed for some sort of crop this summer before I add more in autumn. Everything seems fine so far, just babies! How are yours growing?
Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance

        For Snadger
Thanks for the tip about mole hills! Will mix it in with other stuff in the beds, I'm trying for about 1/2 - 2/3 soil and the rest compost. I'm in the Potteries so I have lots of lovely heavy sticky clay! Cauli's have been firmed in and appear to be OK. We'll see.
