  • Couch grass

    This may be a really stupid question, but what exactly does couch grass look like? Does it look similar to standard garden lawn grass, and is there a danger I might have put couch grass into my composter without realising?

      Don't use it on the compost heap unless you plan not to use the heap for 9 months.

        Thanks - to be honest I doubt if the compost will be ready until next year anyway. I'll definitely leave it now though, just in case.

          Top growth is coarse and fast and when you pull it up it has long white runner-like roots. Normal lawn grass has fine roots that stay in one place. If you do put on the compost, please leave it out in the sun to dry out completely before you compost it. I must admit, this is one of the few weeds that I burn.

            I was thinking that I will have to burn a load too. My pallet compost bin is full of the stuff. But Rysty lady we can re use the ash from the fire, so maybe not so bad? :-}
