  • Runner bean question

Because of limited space I only have one thing to grow runner beans on, an old lampshade stand to which I've added string for climbing.

Should I only grow one runner bean plant on such a support? Would it be safe to plant two (one on each side) and have them both climbing up, or would the plants be too heavy for the support?

How ingeniou! Please send a photo in to GYO - we'd love to see it! Do you mean you have several pices of string attached in a sort of wigwam form? Or just one or two? I reckon if you attach four pieces of string and anchor the stand in the ground properly it should be fine!

How big is the stand? Is it like a standard lamp? If so I am sure you could add string and maybe some cane and grow a few up around it?

I am sure someone will be along shortly with better ideas.

It's a bit difficult to describe, but yes I have attached some strings that means it looks like a cross between a wigwam and a maypole.

Two plants per string should be fine. Good luck. One word or caution, please use "plastic" string - it's heartbreaking if you use twine and everything collapses just when you should be harvesting. This happened to me years ago growing tomatoes and I lost most of them.
