  • Recycle with Freecycle

    Hi all,

I know I'm new to the Vine, but I wanted to encourage you all to join your local Freecycle forum (almost as addictive as this one! )

There are many groups around the country, and you can join those closest to you. It's the perfect place to advertise things you have that you need to rehouse but don't want any money for and would prefer not to throw away/take to the tip. You can also post requests for items you want (within reason) The groups are well moderated and all posts are checked and approved (or not) before going live.

Join through Yahoo Groups http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/search?query=freecycle, which lists all the local forums (143 of them).

I've even made a local gardening buddy through my forum.

    Happy Freecycling

I use ours and I know there are several other freecyclers on the vine SD. A couple of weeks ago we got rid of my father-in-law's elderely grass cutter this way. It cut grass very well but was too heavy for him to use. He has had a hip replacement and is 83 so he needed something much lighter. It was snaped up (and collected) within a couple of hours. Great - no landfill or waste. He is now the proud owner of a new machine that he CAN manage.

We use this a LOT too. Have just handed over all the kids old wellies to a school that are going to be planting a garden for eating after summer break. Great idea I thought!

We've got rid of a lot of stuff on Freecycle (as have my mum and sister) and we've also got quite a few good finds including glass demi-johns, a greenhouse and a dog bed (which the dog promptly ate)!

We check ours almost everyday. We have gained from it and advertised our stuff. Its great.
I do think its becoming a little abused, someone was asking for a road worthy horsebox the other day.Is this a little greedy.
          Does anyone else agree?.

What is the use of a horse box without wheels

Yes I agree that there are some greedy so and sos around. i belong to 3 local freecycles and have just left one because i am so fed up with all the 'wants'. They outnumber the 'offers'.

Someone was after garden furniture, then posted again to say 'thanks for al the emails but please no more offers of plastic chairs because I only want teak'!!!!!

Another guy posted three threads, one after the other. Sky digibox, laptop and an electric guitar and amp.

Such a shame that its getting so abused and I appreciate that IO could just ignore the mails that wind me up but I've decided to vote with my feet.

Bit of a habit actually. I dropped out of the group where I lived before because they decided that freecycling pets was fine. One woman snapped up a pair og guinea pigs then posted 'i really need a hutch and run and hay and straw now because the piggies are living in the bath'.

                  Hello

Someone on one of my local freecycle keeps on asking for roadkill

Strange world but i notice that people are getting greedy asking for nearly new items like plasma tv and dvd recorders and cars. I have my fair share of items and also gave a few things away the best one i had was a dishwasher the guy was moving it was only a month old with 5 years john lewis warranty on it.

                  Cheers

It's not so much the cheeky wants.
Don't ask don't get and if it's stupid what are they going to get?
                    Right, Nothing.

Some of the offers can be strange.
                    Recent ones on the two groups I'm on are;
A tree seedling growing in my flower bed, collector digs it up.
A plastic draining board rack, a bit dirty!

It's the casual takers who are worst.
I've been clearing stuff from my late mother's house, too good to tip, but not stuff we want or need.

Peple who want desperately, then never respond again.
People who arrange an appointment and are never heard from again.
People who come and look and change their mind.
People who cannot read a "Taken" announcement.
People who don't seem to consider that you might have something else to do than wait around for them to turn up.
People who think a sob story is needed to get the item.
People who think their need is greater than anything else and so manners are not needed.
People who seem like they are collecting forr their boot sale or e-bay account.

Still I guess that's people when you offer them something for nothing.
Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

I can understand the wants if you are trying to live a green life and not buy in when something could be freecycled, but a plasma TV!!
There are a lot of wants on ours but I suppose it also prompts those of us who have whatever it is to think do we really need it? got rid of my exercise bike that way, too fagged after being on the allotment to use it!
It's worth asking I suppose, you never know. I asked for some scales as I wanted them for my shed and although I could easily buy them, thought it would be one less item from China I'd be responsible for, I got some replys which I answered but never heard from them again so had to go and buy some anyway.
Have got rid of two things and both were collected promptly but without a car have had to pass by some of the more tempting offers like paving stones, butler sinks etc.

We had someone offer a couple of bigger items (a matress etc), then come on the next swearing that folk are obviously to rich to want her items.

Not quite the spirit of freecycle.

I get sick of the 'Wanted: new working laptop' ones...

Freecycle is great: disposed of lots of surplus stuff incl wood for fires .
No problems with Wanted notices: I speed read the day's summary.

I have a very nice chest freezer from it: AFTER being de-rusted, repainted and cleaned 3times with bleach... and a new interior bulb...

Ignore the silly asks: around here our moderators kick off eventually the idiots...
