Bumping this very old thread because I knew there was some reason I didn't want to use vermiculite, but couldn't remember why, so I did a little search... Did anyone find a decent substitute? I'm thinking the leftover fish tank gravel I have might be worth a go?

I use hort grit. Or any clean grit I can get my hands on. Or just compost.

Wonder if you could bake egg shell then grind them up ......bit like they do to feed back to chooks?

It's more for mixing in with the compost that I'm looking rather than sprinkling over the surface. Reckon I'll try the fish tank gravel, it's about the size of hort. grit, just brighter coloured : D

ETA: That's probably worth a go as well Bins

I find just compost works fine, not enough time to do the extra phaffing

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

.....Since I had a trayload of eggshells at the bottom of the oven - they've been crushed to smithereens and about to become topping on my seedlings. Thanks Bins for the idea

I wash the shell & keep them in a carrier bag, then lay on a tray in the bottom of the oven with the Sunday roast, let them cool, put them in a clear bag, then give them a good going over with a rolling pin

I don't even wash mine There's a tinfoil tray in the bottom of the oven all the time and I bung the shells in whenever.

Not sure if this would work as it is won't break down but then I don't know if vermiculite does but I was thinking grated polystyrene.........I know, it's a messy job..........

Like when your beanbag springs a leak
I have a huge sack of vermiculite - left over Aga insulation, keeping forgetting to use it
