Just wondering what the best stuff to fill it is and roughly how much I'd need (in litres) for a 1x1m bed?

My garden is paved so I've nothing to put in it at the moment and I have no car so I need to sort out exactly how much soil I need in advance then get it in one go.

I was thinking multi-purpose compost plus some pelleted manure but not sure..

If your bed it about 150mm (6 inches) deep then you will need 150 litres of compost to fill it. This does not account for settling but if you have too much compost you could always use it for something else

I have them in my garden and I used about 3x 80l bags per bed but they were deeper than 6 inches, I added granules to boost the nutrients in the compost.

Hi, I've got linkabord and I've filled them with all sorts, mixing up compost, sand, coffee grounds, manure, whatever was to hand really. You will also find they settle and every time you replant need to mix in more compost to keep the level up and renew the growing medium, so when you get compost make sure you have some over.

Thanks for those tips i am at present deciding whether to manually dig up my side garden (which is 44ft long by 10ft wide) to use as a veggie plot or just to buy link a boards and have raised beds. Am costing at present and wondering if to just buy timber and get the hammer out?? What do you think? All ideas gratefully received.
          Thanks Netty

We are using 2 1mx1mx30cm beds (two kits each) and one custom 2.5mx0.5mx45cm.

We ordered a tonne/1 cubic meter of organic topsoil mix from Dandy's thinking it would be enough, but ended up adding almost another tonne from bags bought from Focus. It really is more than you think. We put ours onto membrane.

However, Dandy's do claim to have the best soil available for growing things, including veggies. I guess I'll have to take their word on it for £87 for the tonne. They're easy enough to find on line, and they deliver to your door/garden or in our case the pavement outside the house.

I've heard other forum members suggest contacting your local council to see if they sell their compost which would probably end up cheaper than the way we did it. They may also deliver which would be easier if you don't have a car.

Good luck with it and let us know how you get on.

If you have a Wickes nearby they deliver and their compost is £10 for 4 80l bags plus the cost of delivery.
