do you make or by compost

I buy at the moment - ordered compost bins from the council 2 months ago and still waiting for them to be delivered. so for a while will be buying but with every intenetion of making my own as soon as possible.

I make and buy it in. I have heavy clay at my allotment so I have been buying cheap bags and digging it in to the soil and using it as a mulch. I also dug in muck over the winter but as I haven't found a free source it is expensive and doesn't go far.

I have made my own compost but I'm a bit dubious about it because my friend (who I share plot with) was unknown to me adding fish heads, fish bones and chicken bones and inevitably it attracted rats. I scolded him and he reckons he removed them but i will probably use it for my hedge.

I also buy seed compost for germinating my herbs but for most seeds I use a multipurpose compost and they seem to do fine longs I don't let them dry out.

It's both for me too.

When we filled our raised beds, we bought in an organic topsoil/compost mix, with extra bags of compost.

We've also been filling our compost bin for what seems like forever now, and although I've used a bit for planting a couple of shrubs/plants, it's so difficult to get out of the Dalek without the top stuff falling in to the hole you've made, so although we wanted to use it in our beds, we didn't.

Any tips for getting it out other than to get a second bin, as I'm not sure we have the room. Unless you get nice small ones as I'd love one that fits in the front garden to save having to go all the way round the back.

Both again although I produce around 3 cubic metres and increasing of homemade stuff at home and on the plots a year but only buy in about 5 80litre bags for modules and pots.

Both here too, making for beds on lottie and probably for some tubs depending on whether sowing direct or transplanting and buy in for seeds.

Both for me too; I tend to use the homemade variety for digging in to the veg patch and top-dressing, but the bought stuff for seeds, and also for anything I put in pots. Having said that, I last bought 3 60L bags, with a view to keeping the empty bags and re-filling them from the household recycling place; the stuff looks good and it'll be a fraction of the cost + it's more recycled than the garden centre stuff (although they still won't give us a 'brown bin'.

Both, I try to make as much of my own compost as possible, however it is very hard to keep up with demand

We have used bought, as it's our first years growing, but are making some for next year! Its quite shocking just how much compost you can go thru in such a short time, a major part of our growing expenditure ths year, hopefully not going to cost quite as much next year!
