Reviving this thread rather than starting a new one... I’ve used a Can o’ Worms plastic bin for several years and am still amazed at the kitchen waste gunge that goes in and the rich compost + free liquid feed that comes out. The multi-tray system works well.

I’d like to get another one and wonder if anyone’s tried using the square multi-tray model from “Original Organics”? (who claim to have invented the idea of the wormery). See http://www.originalorganics.co.uk/index.htm

As they all tend to be very expensive I’m wondering if anyone’s invented/built for themselves a cheaper alternative that works just as well? The essentials seem to be: easy to get the gunge in; easy to get the compost and liquid feed out; frost protected or moveable; relatively free from flies. For example, has anyone converted a wheelie bin? (not that I have a spare wheelie bin but can always nick a neighbour’s I suppose… )

Some sites seem to supply “tiger worms” (as originally supplied to me), some “dendrobaena worms” – are they one and the same?

Oh what a great site, thanks Alison, it's taken me two evenings to wade (wriggle?) through a small part of it.... And now I'm feeling parentally guilty about my worms as I just put the gunge in and take the compost out, (e.g. I don't give them treats or invite them in to watch the telly... ).
