  • Reusing compost

I'm growing potatoes in big containers and it will soon be time to harvest one of the containers.

I know you shouldn't re-use the same compost for growing potatoes again, in order to avoid diseases building up, but is there anything else I should not use the compost for? I still need to re-pot various plants and use compost in the ground on the main vegetable patch, so is there any section that I shouldn't use it on? Or any section that it would be particularly useful to use it on?

I'd avoid tomatoes too - they are susceptible to the same diseases.

I was going to use my potato compost as a mulch around my ornamental plants and let the rain wash it in, perhaps with a bit of fish, blood and bone as well.

Last year i spread my potato compost on my veg patch and dug it in in the autumn. Been fine.

It makes a mighty fine soil conditioner.

Spread the used compost on any beds or borders. Leave the worms to pull it into the ground. Works wonders as a soil conditioner.

I do likewise or put it in the compost bin.
The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.
