Increasing soil pH-any tips?

Looking at the UK soil pH map and judging from all the plants around looks like I need to spread some lime to get any veg to grow. According to all maps our soil is in the range of 4-5 pH.
Typical flora consists of foxgloves,Scot's pine,gorse and the other inedible species. Soil is sandy and probably nutrient poor as hardly anything grows here.

I was thinking about adding some lime and BFB this year ( no chance of manure this year).

Has anybody managed to turn around their soil succesfully? Any tips welcome,thank you very much

Have you tested your own soil? If its garden soil it may have a different PH to your surroundings.

Have you looked at the Back To Eden method of wood chip mulching. From all accounts it can quickly turn round poor sandy soil into usable ground. There's lots of vids on you tube.

Thank you very much for your replies. Completely forgot about wood ash. As for checking pH -might do with litmus paper as I don't really want to buy a meter. Wood chip mulching- not enough time atm,might consider in the future. thank you all
