Slaters in compost bin

Helloooo,

Every time I open the lid of my compost bin there are more and more slaters running about! Are they a good, bad or indifferent indicator of compost quality?

Could be that the compost is a bit too dry.

Woodlice.
My compost bins have always been full of them.
They do what they do, I feed them.
Never had a problem.

A slater is a woodlouse that doesn't roll up, the others are called roll ups. Or so my kids said!!

Never heard of Slaters either and I thought roll ups were something quite different

Could be too dry, I have been adding a lot of torn up cardboard recently... but also plenty of fruit and veg waste. Ray Mears could live for months on this lot!

In Edinburgh and probably a lot more places, we call them Granny Slaters. I don't know why.
