What crops?

I'm sure this is something that has been covered somewhere amongst the other threads, but to keep it simple to find and all in one place, what crops do you grow in your schools?

The Summer hol's are such a pain

Possibly cutting it a little thin, I'm hoping to source some first early potatoes to plant on Friday.
I'll also get them sowing some radish,beetroot and carrot...the first being quick to grow and the second can be eaten as babies.

I've yet to do it but plan on sweet talking the caretakers into some watering duties, so could also do parsnips, brassicas, sweetcorn and squash.

Also,yet to check if I can arrange a couple of Eco Club dates in the Summer hols....so could harvest beans,peas and toms.


What do you all grow?

I go in during the summer hols to water and pick, but if you can't then you'd have to accept that a lot of stuff will die if we had a drought.

We grow everything really: we pick shelly/dried beans and squashes from September, then brassicas over the winter

I also go in to water, open the polytunnel and harvest over the holidays. Last year i organised 1 day a week for the kids to come in and help and take home anything that was ready. They weren't all available every week, but I generally had 2 or 3 of them. It was nice because I usually have Year 6s and they would have missed out on a lot of the stuff they'd grown otherwise. Then when the Year 5s took over in September, they got to harvest things right from the off instead of having to wait til the following year.
Will you be growing in the ground, or in containers? If stuff is in containers, could they go home 'on loan' over the hols to be looked after by the kids?

We grow in the ground. I still need to chat to the caretakers, either to arrange for them to water or times they can let me in.

We're growing popcorn for the first time - it can be left to dry on the plant so should be ready by autumn.
Determinate tomatoes, radish, multi coloured chard, salads, onions, peas (lots!), beans, strawberries, brassicas.
Leeks, (maincrop) potatoes, carrots are other crops ready in autumn/winter
And they adore pumpkins - we have such a small school we can grow 1 per infant so can have a mini competition. They love the names too, one boy last year became rather obsessed with Chicago warted hubbard!

I go in during hols too (chicken rota) but I find the crops don't need watering much but harvesting to keep them going

We too go in over hols, we did open it up to the whole group bt mainly 2-3 adults and our kids came each time. we had a 10--1 session every tuesday and also tried to offer a different activty each session such as making dream catchers alongside the actual gardening.

ooh-I like the popcorn idea.I'm assuming it's normal sweetcorn but is it a particular strain? Trouble is-got no idea how to do it-enlighten me please!
