We were always told that if there were lots of autumn berries about it meant a hard winter. Didn't work last year, lots of berries but winter didn't even kill the greenflies.

Is this because the seasons are changing? Lots of berries again this year, but autumn tree colour was pathetic. Leaves falling off without changing colour, and those that hung on long enough to colour fell off 3 days later.

My grandfather's, which is often repeated by my mother, is

"When there's no money coming through the door, love flies out the window."

Bit negative but probably very true. My mother is the youngest of six, my grandfather sailed the MN convoys in WW2, took part in the little boats evacuation of St. Malo, was a fisherman, taxi driver and gardener and is still alive at 102. I figure he probably had some idea what he was talking about.

Hang on to your happeny lest it turn into a florin!

There may be something lost in the translation here but this is what it sounded like when my Mother was talking to my sister!

Snadger, I think it's an old version of the saying "look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves"

What do you think it means then LJ?

I was thinking along the lines of a florin is much higher value than a ha'penny bit so 'look after it incase it becomes better' kind of thing...
