Somebody on the BBC board is asking if anybody knows what the rootstocks are, as they only have a small garden. Are there any hints on your trees people..?

#14 - Ah Protea, that makes sense! Think I'll give them a miss then, although my mum has told me that someone told her (sounds like an urban legend) that lemon trees keep the ants at bay. Anyone know is this is true?

There's nothing on the packaging about rootstocks, as far as I've noticed. The trees have clearly been grafted, but not sure onto what!!!

You can grow trees in a hole lined with a root barrier to control their growth though - just make sure it is a 'proper' root barrier, not just a planting bag or landscape fabric.

Probably, if you bash them with it!!

We've just got back from our local Aldi. I forgot to go on Thursday when the fruit tree special started, but they had loads of apples and pears left. I managed to get the Apricot, which was what I really wanted, actually got two as I asked at the till if they had more and they fetched me another one. Its Burton on Trent Aldi if anyone in the area is still looking.

Will I need to stake these trees if I put them in pots??

Ideally I would stake them, though they might well be fine in a garden that's not windy.

I'd be tempted to plant them in the biggest pots you can find, or put a thick mulch on top of the compost so you don't have to spend a lot of time watering them in summer.

Quite aside from the crops, fruit trees are so pretty I don't know why everyone isn't growing them!
