I've just read on another thread a grape nearly poking their eye on a vertical cane in the greenhouse. Pretty dangerous things when you think about it. If you come into my patch you'll probably see empty beer cans topping them off and the odd plastic lemonade bottle. How inventive are you at making your garden, greenhouse or lottie safe to work in?

The used plastic cups from the water cooler at work are great for putting on the tops of canes that are going to have net over them.
(I also poke holes in the bottoms and use them as plant pots!)
I won't use metal or glass on the allotment, but plastic drink / water bottles definitely get used as cane toppers (and don't blow off in the wind!)
You can also roll up seed packets and stuff them into small clear plastic bottles with the labels removed, and put them on the tops of the canes so you know what you've planted.---
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

I have a thing about keeping the paths clear of obstacles so I don't fall over anything, but on the other hand I do use the paths for plants in pots which sort of defeats the object.I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

I've seen those 'good for your insides little yoghurt drink' bottles, which look very neat and effective as cane toppers, but now I've given it a little more consideration I think cans are the way to go!Life is too short for drama & petty things!
So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly!

completely solve the problem (unless you're 7 1/2 foot tall) by buying 8 foot canes (sorry wayne, you have to carry on with beer cans ) and as well as that, you can soak them, then bend them in half and stick each end in the ground, to stick net or fleece or whatever over and theres nothing to poke you.
