My tip is:- Save all your plastic bags for the lottie! Take a bag full of them as its surprising how many you need, especially just now when everthings coming to fru-ition
It means you can bring home your veg in a bag of there own and keep them as-dug. I came home with four bags today, french beans,Carrots & Tatties,Courgettes & Cucumbers, Cauli's.
If I had to cram them all in one bag there would have been a right mess! And I refuse to carry a trug!!!
I also use a bag to kneel on while picking low growing crops to keep my jeans clean!
I'll probably get grief from the 'Bag for life' brigade but bags can be re-used!

Yeah, the bags for life can be reused - over and over. That's what they're about. Was there a fundamental point there that I missed.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

On another forum, I saw a message that some of the supermarkets are looking at biodegradeable plastics for bags - this means you could compost them.

            I've got a good idea for a bio-degradeable bag.

Why not make them from brown paper?.....Awh shucks...somebody already thought of that in Victorian times! ...Never mind, what goes around comes around so they say!Lol

Good idea Snadger! its a shame that more supermarkets dont use brown paper bags instead of carrier bags! I reuse the ones I get from the supermarket around the house/in the garden (as you suggested) and also when taking Dexter the dog for walkies! dexterdog

Just noticed, the bags I get from Tesco's have 'Please re-use or recycle me...100% degradable' on the side.
Well I am doing as it requests initially but wonder how long they take to break down and what do they break down into?

Sounds like at last the supermarkets are getting the message to recycle! Wasn't there a supermarket the other week, think its Sainsburys who are going to use totally recyclable packaging in their home products? (or something similar!). Dexterdog

Interesting article here about Tesco's carriers. I've been putting Co-op degradable bags into the compost for a while but am now wondering if I've been wasting my time as they get no sunshine. I think the best approach is just to avoid collecting them in the first place.

Carriers (and the ridiculous amout of packaging on products in general) are an excellent example of something that it ought to be easy to do somethng about (i.e. Ireland where they now charge for carriers and the number of new ones handed out each year has plummeted) but which government and big business seem entirely unwilling to act upon.

There's an item here about other ways they can be recycled. Quite a lot of supermarkets provide recycling bins for them these days, but only a few councils will take them in the kerbside recycling scheme.

                    Ian.

I always have bags in the back of my car for just in case moments (sow a bush full of Raspberries while I was stuck in traffic - so I stopped picked them and made 5 pots of jam from them). I then wash them out after using them and hang them inside out on the washing line. It only take a few mins for them to blow dry and then they are ready for use again.

New door must think I'm mad hanging out plastic bags on the washing line!!!!

They just don't know what they are missing. Foraging is a lost art and those of us that do are often seen as weirdo hippies with too much time on their hands unlike the rest of society which shops in air-conditioned boxes which induce stress and high bills but are nevertheless convenient when you are a hard-pressed, "contributing" member of society; would never try nettle soup; wouldn't know where to pick blackberries and would worry about the mess and thinks that unless it comes nicely packaged in cling film and plastic with lots of labels giving you the nutritional information it can't possibly be any good for you.

Not that we aren't contributing etc. just doing it our way with an eye to putting stuff back for others to enjoy and making the most of what bounty nature has to offer.
                              Bright Blessings
