I think kwiksave were bought out by somerfield who then shut down all the branches! well, they did in leyland anyway. I also try and go for the cardboard boxes rather than carriers when I do my shopping because I can leave that out for the recycling lads. I love my very old trug - I got it free with a gardening magazine about 15 years ago when my only interest in gardening was hanging baskets. Actually, when I decided to GYO earlier this year it was quite surprising the amount of tools etc that I already had... obviously I never throw anything away! DDL

What's wrong with a trug Snadger? I got a really cool one from Aldi for �1.99. They are actually very good, if you use plastic carrier bags your stuff gets squashed. Trugs mean you have a broader base to lay things on. I do still use placcy bags

Yeah, I spotted them in my local Garden centre reduced to 99P but......Have you seen the way I drive? My car would finish up like a giant trug! Lol

I keep all plastic/carrier bags, I use them instead of bin liners, I don't produce much waste what with chickens, rabbit, compost heap and raeburn so a little bin suits me fine. What bags don't get used around the house/garden get given away to charity shops or to the stands at our very small farmers market. Where do you guys get cardboard boxes from, all the shops n supermarkets here say they are not allowed to keep then 4 customers as fire/health n safety risk or some such. I remember as a child we always used to use them and would like to again (my rabbit loves to play with boxes we stick them together and make bunny castles )

I used to love playing inside cardboard boxes when I was tiny!!

I asked at Waitrose if their bags were bio-degradeable and the woman at the checkout looked at me as if Id just fallen out of a tree! you'd think with all the money Waitrose/John Lewis make, they would provide biodegradeable bags!)

I had to pay for a bag at Ikea yesterday, but only really needed one for fiddly things...once I opened the boot of my car I had plenty to hand!!
No wonder my OH calls my car a shed on wheels!!

My sister and I had loads of fun in boxes as kids. The things they could be!!

Nicos I don't think anyone does proper biodegradable bags, degradable yes but that simply means they break down eventually. Even a glass bottle will do that. In terms of plastic bags I think it means they break down a little faster than normal plastic bags. In the meantime they are still around to cause probs for birds etc. But I know what you mean.

CC - if you time it right you can pick boxes up at most shops, you just have to be around when they are stocking up.

Earthbabe Tesco's I am sure claim their bags break down within 12 months.

Accordinig to the Tesco web site, all their free plastic bags are "degradable" - no comment on how long they take to break down though.

In January 2004 Tesco introduced biodegradable carrier bags. These bags begin to degrade after 2 months and after a year and a half should be totally decomposted. However, the recycling companies weren't happy because the bags wouldn't be good enough for recycling.

LJ - you are probably right. I am very cynical about these things. The only one whose claims I know are Nature Boy and Girl who claim you can put their nappy bags in the composter. Their nappy liners are fully degradable too as I think are most for those who use washable nappies. I must admit we didn't have a composter then so I can't vouch for the degradability.

It's Great. You can get freezer bags, pedal-bin liners, compost bags, refuse sacks & swing bin liners all made of potato starch and are 100% degradable. Fabulous!!

Mazel-bee, where do you get your bags from? I've managed to find some but have really struggled to get a decent range.

I'm a bit of a green natured person, quite free spirited!
I have a green shop - thatgreenshop.com which sells these great bags. I know waitrose do refuse sacks, Unfortunately I don't know many other places to get them. Some local health shops do them ( not the familiar chains though) and some quirky places too. I'm not plugging myself, honest!! looking after the planet is close to my heart and engraved in my blood now.
