101 uses for plastic trays

Following on from Snadgers idea re: placcy bags, since I started to GYO I've reused the plastic trays you get meat in, and the ones you get mushrooms in from the supermarket.
I use them as saucers under plant pots, and on occasion have used them as seed trays! I also have one on my kitchen windowsill to put all my compost stuff into before throwing it in the compost bin. I also use one of these trays to put in my goodies from the garden.
Has anyone got any more ideas?

Hi Dexter - I think you've covered it all. I've started collecting them - got a small stock in the garage. I was wondering if you could use the clear ones as either propagator lids or mini cloches?

Hi all. I don't tend to use the meat ones because of potential for bugs etc. but do reuse all the veg ones. Fruit punnets with or without holes for propagators or if I want a really deep seed tray. Also reuse yogurt pots for potting on, toilet rolls instead of root trainers and anything I can for putting stuff in the freezer.

Oh yes and lolly sticks for plant labels.

I've washed/scrubbed out all my trays with hot, soapy+disinfectant in the water - is this OK to kill any bugs? Dexterdog

You are probably ok dexterdog, it's me I think and the fact that sis is a microbiologist. In fact she may be able to shed light on whether it is ok to reuse the meat ones. Will pm her and ask for info.

I use Tesco cake holders, the clear plastic ones with the lids attached for raising small seed like Petunias or Lobelia. Its like a mini greenhouse all to themselves.

I can't imagine that meat bugs in the soil will cause a lot of problems even if they exist. Your not going to eat the soil remember.

Think your right, JD - come to think of it, or I'd rather not, but my back garden where I'm growing my veg.......mmmmmm lets just say a certain dog used to go in there!.....hopefully, not too much information! DDL

We did dig the soil down to quite a depth and got rid of it all - in case you are wondering! DDL
