  • market stall waste

Has anyone ever gone to their local market at packing up time and asked for any fruit and veg waste ? I dont mean edible things, I mean chopped off leaves and squashed things, to put into compost or to make a bean trench perhaps ?
It should be a quick way to get lots of good compostable material and possibly even be a favour for the stall holders who wold have to dispose of it somehow. Or maybe I am way behind the curve and there are fights for this stuff between local growers ?!

You must be a very dedicated composter !! Never thought of doing that!

I havent done it yet either ! I just thought of it today and wondered if it was common practice. I do want more compost than usual at present as I am establishing a new plot, so this is something I'll try and let you know how I get on.

I know that a person who has some pigs and chickens has all the green waste from our local market stall, well infact he has everything other than onions and citrus fruit.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

My chooks eat onions.........but won't touch oranges and lemons!

I always ask for leaves for the chooks and get the old carrot tops and brassica leaves etc that no-one wants and they tear off. Not thought of composting them though.

We've asked for cabbage leaves, carrot tops etc. to feed to the rabbits.

I don't use a market (grow my own!) but I do empty the school's fruit bins and the staffroom bin which is full of teabags for my compost heap

Hi when we kept goats I asked for the waste at the greengrocers and he was very happy for me to collect on a saturday evening, we ate loads of it ourselves as nothing was wrong with it exscept he always put fresh out on a monday. There was always a dozen or so large boxes and the deal was we took it all and left the place tidy, which we did for several years.

Yes. I asked the stall holder who has a veg stall and uses our carpark what he did with all the stuff he could'nt sell. He said it was a problem so I have it all off him now chop it up and compost it. Some on site are annoying though as if I am not there when he delivers they will go though the boxes and take stuff presumably for home but they do leave a mess. One sat morn i saw he had left some nice caulis I went to the garage for 1/2 an hour and when I came back all had been nicked. I have been going about 5 years now. It gives me some nice compost and saves him money as he has to pay to dump it.
