sounds like you've had the ideal background snadger to be able to plant things in precise rows etc! could you teach me? I can't even draw a straight line with a ruler! DDL

I usd to get pelleted seed years ago, which because of its size was easier to space in rows. Coated with a substance which breaks down once it gets wet, these worked quite well. Don't know if you can still get them though?
I'm sure I've seen some in a catalogue recently. Brain too tired at the mo to remember where so will check when feeling brighter. I think you are right about the clay. I remember reading about this. I suspect the fact it was also treated with fungicide means it is more difficult to find as fewer retail seeds are treated.
As for the straight lines. Mine are sort of with a string and two bits of bamboo (got a proper name but can't remember), it's just that there is no spirit level and so it's straight but at an angle
