LOL Alison - bet you got some funny looks.

When I tried to explain to someone at work, they thought I wanted to keep worms as pets. It was only when I explained properly that they would look me in the eye again. They thought I'd gone completely loopy.

Have suggested to our environmental champion at work that we could have a wormery out the back by the bins and that if we collected apple cores, banana skins, tea bags etc I'd be quite happy to feed them to the worms. She said she'd have to think about it which I think means I'll never hear from her again as she sees me as scary worm woman!

Just thought you lot might like to know after reading this thread i went and looked at the trouble at the mill site and then went out and made my own wormery for £12.50! Instead of cutting a hole out of the bottom and putting in wire mesh i just drilled lots holes! My wormery is also lilac! As they had blue with footballs on, green with footbaalls on or lilac! I have ordered the worms @ £24 and some worm treat and some anti-acid lime for £11. So not too bad on cost and only took 20 mins to make!

You'll have to let us know how you get on, sounds like great value for money. I think you'll also need some bedding to start the worms off in but suspect you could simply use some ordinary compost and they'd be happy.

Thanks Squirrel. I've just looked at the link and will attempt to make one sometime. It may have to wait until spring when I know what time I have during the week with Miss E at school.

            Looks great though.
            Bright Blessings

My can of worms came with a block of compressed coir to start them of in. Poundland were selling those blocks a while ago. I've not been in for a while but worth a look.

                Hi all
                Please help.
I was very interested in all the things that you people were saying. I really liked the idea of the wormery that you made yourself from the trouble at mill site. But, it seems that the link is not there any more. . All that came up was details on a folk group.
Please, if anyone has the time and/or has made one themselves could you please give me some details as to how you did it or another way to get to the site or something similar.
I have to say that when it comes to the internet I am more than a little bit of a nerd, so it could be that the link is there but I just could not find it.
                thanks

                    Anthony,

I got ours because we only have a yard & some raised beds, not enough soil-space for a proper compost bin, yet I didn't like wasting so many peelings etc.

You get compost and worm-wee out of it, the wee is a very good fertiliser apparently.

And it's fun having your own pile of wiggly worms, especially with a toddler in the house!

Now that I have a lottie, most of our scraps are going up to the compost bin there, with the worms getting a weekly / fortnightly top up.

The wormery also makes compost much more quickly than a normal heap. I use the wormery for all the kithcen scraps and uses the dalek bin for all the garden waste to get the best of both worlds

You're probably not doing anything wrong, I'm guessing that you're not feeding your worms much yet so not much moisture will be produced - veg waste is a high percentage water and therefore I think the more you put in the more liquid will be produced, although if you're worms can't keep up it will just go manky and stink! I didn't get much off mine last year (started it at the end of August) and didn't have the nerve to use it until part way through this summer as was concerned that I'd end up killing things. It can be pretty strong stuff so I water it down 10:1 ish and if it smells at all iffy then suggest you put it down the drain rather than risk your plants. Anway, to summarise this ramble, don't worry, if your worms seem OK and the bedding is healthy looking with worm casts up the wall then you're probably fine.

A few but read somewhere that the original inhabitants wander more than the ones which are born there and I definitely don't seem to get as many wanderers as I used to. I used to check every now and again and fish them out but haven't done so for a bit. Often get a couple of drowned worms in the worm wee but not enough to worry me. Tend to fish any dead ones out and leave them on the bird table.
