  • Local Independent Nurseries

I thought it would be a good idea to have a log of local independent nurseries, that Grapes know, love, use and that other local Grapes might not know about.

    Post the:
    Name
    County/Region
    Town
    Website
    and
    Why you love it.

    Swarkestone Nursery

I love this nursery, they get various veg in for 18 p a seedling, then have a range of veg growing and bring them out at various intervals; and at the end of the season sell off huge chilli and tomato plants for a song - so if you have a greenhouse/polytunnel you can take them home and have a late crop.

They also have a wide range of seeds, and sell of the faded/older seeds at really reasonable prices.

Their non-veg stuff is also great, it has good parking and grows most of its stock on site.

They very nearly have everything that you need for any sort of gardening - it really is a great place and lovely to just give you ideas about what can grow when.

And, they don't seem to force things out early - they will have sings telling you when the veg is coming out rather than bring things out early and forced, so that people don't have trouble when they get them home.

      Welcome to Matthews Plants

Run by a lovely young man and his family.
They grow most of the plants themselves and the prices are very good
They always help you to your car and say hello when you come in
Started from nothing a few years back and are now doing really well - good luck to them!

          In Perthshire, Scone.
Bonhard Nursery is just lovely. Beatiful setting and still has the old conservatories with massive vines hanging with grapes from the days when it was the estate kitchen garden.
They have a massive range of plants in excellent condition and all shown in a garden setting.
          Good tearoom too.
It's not the cheapest place to buy but they're not there for your economy but for your delight.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Inverurie Garden and Machinery Centre, Inverurie. They don't have a website I don't think. Lots of variety and very friendly and helpful staff. Lovelylooking restaurant upstairs too. Not the cheapest either, and Homebase has just opened up 100yds from them, so will see what that does.

Lovely place, they grow must things themsleves and has a wide range of plants, veg...etc, plus sweet cats that follow you around. Only place I have found in Leicester that you can choose your potatoes, and have such a wide range. Great staff who give great advice.

Family run business where they grow most stuff themselves. Very economical, very wide range of plants of all types. Sometimes difficult to locate exactly where to find it if you are looking for anything in particular, but just ask and someone on the staff knows exactly where to find it. No mail order, no website, just a fantastic nursery. People come from far away.
