  • Where Do You Buy Your Seeds?

I'm planning which seeds to but for my plot next year. There are so many online stores selling seeds, and some are very pricey. My main gripe is the P&P- it should be free!

Anyhoo, where do you recommend buying good quality seeds for all the usual popular veg like carrots, sprouts, cabbage, onion, etc?

I'd prefer to buy online, if poss'.

I wait for Wyevale to have their clearance sale (should be soon) and I buy loads of seeds at 50p a packet. Then I lose them and buy new ones next year from Wilkinsons

I use a variety depending on whether they have any special offers, T&M, Kings, Moreveg Suttons etc, T&M did have a 50% veg seed sale but it may either just finished or finishing very soon, Suttons also has a 50% off seed sale at the moment.

I tend to buy from Suttons, or Kings Seeds (lovely catalogue!), or I pop into Wilkos and B&Q for their bargains. I keep thinking I'll have a look at Seeds of Italy, and there's a company that sell seeds in small quantities (can't think what they're called, but I'm sure someone will refresh my memory!).

For basics I stick to buying from Wilkos (usually their own range), Wyevale or our local independent garden centre. I just stocked up at Wyevale because they're doing 50% off at the moment. If I'm looking for something more interesting then Seeds of Italy have a fantastic selection, especially when it comes to french beans and courgettes. They always have loads of seeds in the packets too so they're quite good value for money. Plants of Distinction and Simpsons Seeds both have good selections of tomatoes and chillies. T&M seeds seem to be good quality, but when you compare the number of seeds to packets of Suttons or Unwins seeds they're not cheap!

Because it surely doesn't cost £1.50 to post a packet of seeds weighing less than a spoonful of sugar!

Plus the cost of someone packing it, storing it, finding that packet, popping it in an envelope, sticking your address on, taking it to the post office etc etc....plus the materials, the packet, the envelope, the sticker, the delivery note...

                  Why would it be free????

It doesn't cost £1.50 to post a packet of seeds. most of mine arrive with a second class stamp on them, BUT I don't know how much some people pay for their little plastic bags, labels and bubble wrap etc etc... some sites on ebay do actually do free postage, but their seeds tend to be dearer... you can't win. Personally I like Ebay for my veg, because I don't have to buy 2000 carrot seeds to plant in one pot.

I'm fairly sure that Mr Fothergills do free postage on seeds, and they have an online shop.

I buy T&M seeds if they have what I'm looking for, because their germination rate has always been great for me. Also buy from Real Seed Co, they have some great stuff and you can save the seeds from everything so that save you money for next year. Then there's the free with magazine stuff, the obscure types of chillis that I buy from various different web-sites, the stuff I get in seed swaps and the selection I get from the Heritage Seed Library every year...

EBAY......buy hey u cannot expect free postage, unless you buy a large quantity to make it worthwhile....i thought the quality of the seeds would be more important than free postage

Thats the one! Thanks Seahorse - and they do free P&P on orders over £5 if that is what you are looking for. As others have said, for me its not really a consideration, I'm looking for quality and choice (and occasionally bargains).
