Reply from the Boss lady of Wiggly Wigglers on twitter.. The mushroom logs were a mistake.
They are very sorry and will let you who requested them know it was a mistake.

I think they are intending to send out the spore kits instead, but you will be contacted.

A spore kit sounds worth a try though, even though I've never managed to get any mushrooms out of one yet. Still, a free one is always worth a go

Thing is if you have joined up to receive their e-news then you will get a really good offer often. I've had free and reduced stuff from them this way loads of times. They put the offer codes in the e-news you get.

BUT.. if you post about the offers publicly then they run out of free/reduced stuff very fast. Double edged sword really.

If those who requested get a spoor kit instead of the log I would suggest keeping in fridge - NOT the freezer - until you get yourselves down to the pet shop.

Then buy a bale of straw for bunnies etc and ensure you have a fairly large plastic bag which can be sealed. Perhaps also buy a standard sized cat litter tray to keep the construction on?

I'll see if I can find the instructions for the T&M straw kit I bought a while back - but if anyone else can fill in between times that would be great! T&M may even have instructions on their website.

It will mean you need fridge space - quite a bit - for around 10 days before unleashing the impregnated straw bale into its growing phase. We fortunately bought a drinks only fridge a while back - so ideal and no hardship.

I did Oytsers a couple of years back and they were both very attractive and tasty. Not wildly prolific though - but an interesting project even so.

Up to yet I've had the email saying my seeds are on their way.

Unfortunately the spores in my case were in the form of dowels and not grain which can be used on straw or compots/manure mix.

There was someone close by to me recently that was getting rid of logs from some gardening rejig with a 'please help yourselves' note at the front of house.

Sadly they're now in the skip or someone else has found a use for them. So my dowels are in the fridge and I await another log opportunity. Apparently recently cut logs (up to 6 weeks 'fresh') are best for this method.

Hi Quark1, it says on the pack that they should be hard wood logs, is this vital? I live on the edge of a mixed woodland where they have just cut lots of pines/spruce -would we be able to use these, or should I hunt for some deciduous?

Sorry, Mac - pass! Not very clued up on log mushrooming!

Having said that and within sight of a possible freebie - I'd be tempted to try a couple of the dowels on those and see what happens. Take enough logs for all your supply if they allow so that if it seems to be forming up mycelium you can impregnate the rest of your dowels into the logs. Any unused logs could perhaps be used to make some kind of garden arrangement/decoration.
