  • Free compost bin

I don't know where in the country they do it, but they definately do in Hull.
Put your postcode into their search and it will tell you.

I've ordered one for me, and another for me on my next door neighbour's behalf!

Just down the road from you and they don't do it here. They do the cut-price ones, but no freebies.

Still, I've already got 2 dalek bins

I'm delivering training in Beverley on Monday.

It seems that they're only free in some places, in others they do discounts. At my mum's address they're just £12 instead of £40.

Still could be useful if you're after one anyway.

£8 up here - I got two earlier this year. Add to this, a company has just put a leaflet through our door as they are starting up a "kerbisde collection service" (for a fee of course!). Everything they are charging to collect, the nearest town gets collected free by the council. Ah, the perks of living in a rural location..!!

While free/cheap is pretty attractive (not that they are significantly cheaper at all around here) I've heard a few garden centres and the likes have stopped selling composters as they can't compete with the council's cut prices.

I can't help feeling there's something a bit not-right about government taking business from local retailers.

If anything I think the whole thing should be a voucher scheme for discounts at no cost to the retailer - and it'd be cheaper for the council that way too I imagine.

I suppose it's nice to get to spend some of the money government steal from us in the first place, but do think it's a bit of a raw deal for those who make a living selling things like these.

              Ho hum.

As the Government make this big thing about everyone making compost, growing their own, to do with being healthier etc, then they should put their money where their mouth is and give EVERYONE who wants one a free compost bin!

Sucks to be a retailer if the government do that though, eh?

Oh and one more thing... the government don't have any money.
They would be putting OUR money where their mouths are.

Never mind-we live in the CITY of Truro and have to pay for the thin weedy blue plastic sacks for any garden matter to be collected - I can't help thinking that plastic sacks - even if biodegradable - are more environmentally unfriendly than the 'green' wheelie bins provided where our daughters live (Warwickshire and Hertfordshire).

I'm sure I read recently that those "biodegradable" bags actually "biodegrade" by breaking down into smaller bits of plastic rather than what it sounds like they should do and actually break down chemically.

It may even have been on this forum that I saw it mentioned.

Just checked on my councils website and they're re-starting the discount compost bins in January, says its a range including :-

composters, wormeries, caddy liners, aerators, sieves and the like, all at highly competitive prices

I was going to buy another dalek so I'll hang on ans see what they're offering price wise.

Course, you don't actually need one of the fancy plastic composters!! My grandad just made a heap at the bottom of the garden kept from spreading with either wood frames, chicken wire, or whatever was available. I have a wood-framed (wombled wood) heap at home and it makes much better compost than the plastic "Daleks" I have on the lottie.
