  • compost bins for free

These are the bins we have just made from recycled pallets from B&Q. Two are for composting and one is kept just for leaves. Just used my first home made compost to plant some soft fruits. Great feeling! is it true that if you pee in the compost it speeds up the process?

    Hello Vicki Lorraine
Welcome to the Vine and thanks for the tip - I was not aware that B & Q gave anything away- we can but ask.
Mr MB is very keen on adding soil to our compost bins, so they are both full up!! Need somewhere else to put the kitchen rubbish. LOL

        I said SOIL ....not nightsoil

but I was delighted to discover that real gardeners pee in a bucket and add it to the compost

glad to hear this pee theory is correct. I sent my son down to do the business and the security light from the house over the back came on! Would have done it myself but worried i might fall in! A job for the men i think.

On the subject of compost- what is the general concensus on putting rhubarb leaves or citrus fruit in the bin? Is this ok?

LOL !!! It's all to do with the ammonia in Pee. The ammonia is high in nitrogen & helps to speed up the composting process - and it's cheaper than buying activator ! Men's pee is supposed to work better than womens but Mrs G refuses to use the compost bin to try the thory out

And yes they did use Night soil MB, covvered with the ashes from the fire and stacked in a "compost" bin it was dug into the garden to increase the fertility - sort of Getting your own back

if you add a layer of lime every so often it will help keep things in balance. just no cooked or processed foods.

That's why girls do it in a bucket

I was on the lottie soon after we started, and desperately needed a pee. The girl across from me, an experienced gardener, told me to go in the shed and pee in a bucket, then put it on the compost. I felt really 'official' after that, and chuffed to bits. My only worry was that the door would blow open!

Never thought of using a bucket! My son wants to camp out down on our land but i was worried about where he would "go"! Him and his mates can contribute to the cause while they are down there! Im sure they will make a competition out of it though. Perhaps i should draw a target on the back of the bins.

Great idea - pin a piece of metal and they can make a noise too!
How old is he? Mine was big on camping with Cubs and Scouts, lasted till puberty
