I was on the lottie soon after we started, and desperately needed a pee. The girl across from me, an experienced gardener, told me to go in the shed and pee in a bucket, then put it on the compost. I felt really 'official' after that, and chuffed to bits. My only worry was that the door would blow open!
Don't worry at all!!! a bit of fresh air will do you good.

They look mighty fine compost bins vicki.
I'm hoping that LJ is going to give us the itinery for the 'Virtual GYO show' soon which should include best garden/lottie feature conjured up from pallets!

Yours would be a key contender, methinks!

There is a rather lengthy discussion on pee'ing in compost somewhere in the past threads btw!

Nice compost bins Vicki. I like your style.

Wow using the compost bin for my number one sounds a fantastic idea. Just have to convince the Mrs.

Like the compost bins very swish.

Don't know if you know or it has been posted before but most councils are giving away compost bins for free (1 per household) or are doing special offers. I got a web address somewhere and will post if anyone is interested.

You just put in your postcode and it tells you what they can offer you. I got one myself a while ago for free (even the delivery was free)

Now must dash for a pee

thanks for your note. i can get bins from my council too but would need a few for all of the stuff i put in. The pee really does work. I only started my bins in june and i used my first top quality compost couple of weeks ago to plant my goosberries and blackcurrents.

Glad you didn't try cos only boys can do it.

Your horemones are wrong for compost. But mens is great but dilute it.

Do you have any plans cos they look great. I just get 4 and nail them togather.

I find that they now use threaded nails on pallets and dismantling them is a right pain.

                      Hi Nog and Fezino,
Didn't use plans for the compost bins. Got the pallets from BandQ. They are the pallets used to stack the shelves in the outdoor/ building area. They are constructed slightly different and are single layer not double. So u can just secure them together on three sides. The size was perfect. On the front we attached battons of wood (about 1x1 was fine) Two pieces either side. We ensured the gap between the two battons was big enough to accommodate the individual planks. These can then be slotted in and out for removing the compost. We didn't have any trouble seperating the planks from the pallets for this, i think they are easier to take apart than common pallets! If you ask at the front counter at the store they are happy to get rid of what they call white wood. The blue pallets are reused.
The gap between the planks was perfect and allows plenty of air circulation. I only started the bins in June and used the first lot to plant my soft fruits just before Xmas.

Also used the same pallets to create a little 'deck' just outside shed to prevent mud and such! Did use a wood preservative though as the wood was untreated.

                      Happy composting

Hi - just to hark back to the "pee theory". Can anyone explain to me why the female variety, (containing as it does, different hormones from the male variety) is not considered to be quite so beneficial. Are female hormones more harmful than male hormones? Does this also apply to cow manure, which, by definition, is entirely female? I am intrigued, and only ask this because I would be the sole provider of such goodies on to the compost heap, and wouldn't wish to damage any nutritional or other benefits of the vegetables I grow!
                        Regards to all.

                          Good question Marylou,
Can any grapes answer this one? I was contributing to the cause but have stopped mid flow so to speak as i was concerned that i may ruin the good work going on in the compost bin.

Cows are a different matter as what comes out of a cow is the same as what went in. cows are very bad at digesting grass, that's why they have multiple stomachs.

The pee is only acting as an activator to help the bacteria reduce the clipping to compost. I think female horemones affect the bacteria.
