You can also get free compost bins from the "Compost Bin Ordering Line" 0845 658 8550 - the dalek type, but for free its a good idea. DDL

Do you know if this only applies to particular parts of the country, DDL? When I looked at the RecycleNow website, they don't have a scheme for cheap bins running in Plymouth.

        Cheers

Our council offered them at £5 delivered which was quite a good deal. Try getting on to your local councillor MuddySarah, you never know.

          Btw, hows the lottie going?

Our concil do offer a voucher system for daleks, but they still cost nigh on £20. I got one when I first took the plot on, before I found out the old tenant had left me a double home-made bin anyway (all I thought at the time was "lazy b****r, look what I'm going to have to sort out!" and the penny dropped after a visit from a wise aunt). I actually don't have a lot of level ground for another dalek, but thought it might come in handy on the bottom level of my plot where I'm going to put my spuds.

The plot's not doing too bad, thanks for asking Madderbat. Wishing I could get down there a bit more (darn work!), and wishing I had a bit of help/company sometimes. My Ma's a bit old for lending much of a hand, and my Da really hates any sort of gardening; he will do stuff like fix shed roofs but not much else. I have a lovely family on the plot next door and they're always down there together having a right old laugh. I guess I'm a bit jealous of that!

I'd really just like someone with some knowledge (more than me!) to talk things through with. I'm certain there are things I could do that would increase my bed-space without massive expense/work, and I'd also love a bit of advice on where to plant things, what sort of state my soil's in and whether I need to dig more/feed more/sieve it etc. There are people around who chat occasionally, but they have a tendency to use words and phrases I don't really understand, and I end up feeling a real fool!!

We haven't had much of the bad weather recently, though, but I do want to get down soon and see if my poly greenhouse thing stood up to some very strong winds we've had. There wasn't much in it to lose if it has gone over, which is good.

You will never feel a fool on the Vine Muddy Sarah, believe me, and from my experience the support I've found here is the best. Feel free to chuck your questions this way and we'll all chip in our five cents worth (sometimes even making sense and not joking!!) I promise you that no-one here will make you feel daft for asking questions, we've all been there too.
It can get lonely on the plot, but depending where you work, sometimes solitude is worth having!

Hope the winter storm hasn't been too cruel. All the best,

They cover all the country methinks. I got the number from my local council - I rang up and asked if I could call and pick up......it was so funny! They are actually based in Leeds! The girl said, quite correctly, it was a long way to go from Preston! LOL! They delivered my free bin, free of charge within 3 days. Although they did say it could take up to 28 days. DDL

I phoned them this morning to see if they would send something down my way, and they don't supply anything down here . Apparently, they have agreements with local councils to supply bins, but my council isn't signed up with them (darn typical!). Shame, but I guess I'll just have to try and track down some pallets to build a bin myself. Spose I'll be off to B&Q at some point soon then!!!!

                    Sarah,
I would get in touch with your local Council and pester them to join the scheme. Give them the telephone number for the place in Leeds and let them do the work.
I suggest any fellow grapes in Preston do the same.

I agree with VL. With councils having to reduce landfill it's a good idea o encourage people to recycle and compost. Wy not try contacting your local councilor and MP to get them on your side. If they check they will find that lots of councils are doing something posative.

It's a pity Leeds don't supply free bins even though the depot where DDL's came from is only 2 miles from me, but I will keep trying.

Hi Digger - agree with you. I just assumed that all councils would do the same - but that would be too easy wouldn't it? DDL
